MOTORCYCLE COLLISION RECONSTRUCTION

Instructor: Louis R. Peck, P.E.
Duration: 3 to 4 days
ACTAR CEUs: 21 to 28

The Motorcycle Collision Reconstruction course equips the analyst with a firm understanding of motorcycle dynamics and current reconstruction techniques through deep review of literature, sample evidence, and exercises. The following topics are covered:

  1. Introduction to motorcycle crash causation, motorcycle anatomy, and specification research

  2. Review of kinematics including units, conversions, and derivations of basic equations

  3. Fundamentals of motorcycle dynamics (geometry, stability, steering, weight transfer, suspension, etc.)

  4. Motorcycle inspection

  5. Rider perception-response time

  6. Braking systems and rider performance

  7. Introduction to Excel for collision reconstruction

  8. Dynamics of swerving and rider performance

  9. Acceleration behavior, calculations, and gearing analysis

  10. Sliding friction for downed motorcycles

  11. Analysis of wheelbase reduction for determination of impact speed

  12. Angular momentum

  13. Rider and pillion vault analysis

  14. Event data recorders and dataloggers

  15. Simulation analyses for impact speed determination

  16. Monte Carlo analysis to determine confidence in speed ranges

The course is currently offered in two primary formats:

Live, in-person: This version is offered in a three-day and four-day format, depending on the resources of the host. The additional day, which is slotted between the second and third days of instruction, is a field day where brake, swerve, slide, and potentially impact testing are conducted. The field-day data is analyzed and presented to the class on the last day. Students are provided with a book that includes all presentation materials. Pricing for the three-day course is $1,495 per student with a minimum enrollment of 20. The field day is an additional $3,750.

Online with office hours: This course is offered in a three-day format using an online learning system. The lectures are pre-recorded, but I meet with the class after each day of presentations to answer any questions or discuss any topics of interest. Students are provided with a book that includes all presentation materials. Pricing for this format is $1,095 per student with a minimum enrollment of 10.

Virtual, Live: This format is not currently offered. Firstly, it’s not an enjoyable mode of education. Secondly, there is very little feedback and discussion during the virtual lectures. As such, the online format (which includes daily, live discussions) ultimately offers a similar benefit to the attendee.

If you would like to arrange a course, please email me and Samantha McCool-Hill for scheduling.
